Türkiye’s indigenous unmanned jet-powered combat aircraft, Bayraktar KIZILELMA, has successfully destroyed a jet-engine powered aerial target using a beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile — a world first that could redefine the future of aerial combat. The test, carried out over the Sinop firing area on 29 November 2025, demonstrates that KIZILELMA has moved beyond air-to-ground strike capability to validated air-to-air combat.
According to the official statement from developer Baykar, the drone locked on the high-speed jet target using the indigenous AESA radar developed by ASELSAN and launched a domestically produced BVR missile, GÖKDOĞAN air-to-air missile (developed by TÜBİTAK SAGE). The missile struck the target with “complete accuracy,” marking a major milestone: every link in the kill chain — platform, radar, missile — was Turkish-made.
The live-fire demonstration was carried out in formation with five manned fighter jets, emphasising a future in which manned-unmanned teaming shapes air combat doctrines. A companion unmanned system, the Bayraktar AKINCI UCAV, filmed the mission from the air, documenting the event.
This development arrives amid a wave of interest in leveraging unmanned aerial platforms for roles conventionally reserved for piloted fighters. While many UAV programmes focus on air-to-ground strike, surveillance, or reconnaissance, KIZILELMA breaks new ground — establishing that a “loyal wingman” unmanned fighter can now credibly execute air-to-air missions. Analysts note that no other unmanned platform has publicly demonstrated such capability until now.
For the Asia-Pacific region, the significance of KIZILELMA’s success cannot be overstated. As nations across Southeast and East Asia seek to modernise air forces amid growing maritime and aerial competition, the emergence of an affordable, carrier-capable unmanned jet fighter opens new strategic options. Countries with limited budgets or island-nation requirements might find such platforms attractive — especially for distributed maritime airpower or sovereignty patrols without the political and human-risk baggage of manned operations.
Furthermore, KIZILELMA’s carrier-capable design links it to naval aviation ambitions. The aircraft has been envisioned to operate from the navy’s flagship vessels — including the amphibious assault ship TCG Anadolu — which could offer analogous use cases for regional navies in the Asia-Pacific contemplating light carrier or helicopter-carrier assets.
Still, important caveats remain. While KIZILELMA’s radar cross-section is lower than that of many manned jets and it benefits from advanced sensor fusion, its engine and stealth characteristics are not yet on par with the most advanced fifth-generation fighters. That said, the ability to network such UAVs with manned aircraft — or operate in swarms — may offset those limitations through quantity, persistence, and reduced risk to human pilots.
As defence budgets in Asia-Pacific face tight constraints, KIZILELMA’s success may hasten interest in unmanned combat air systems (UCAS). For defence planners and aerospace industry watchers alike, the Turkish achievement signals a shift: unmanned air-to-air combat is no longer science fiction — it is now operationally validated.
