Turkish Airlines has unveiled a massive investment plan to solidify its position as a global logistics powerhouse, earmarking approximately TRY 100 billion (US$2.3 billion) for the construction of the world’s largest cargo terminal and a new in-flight catering facility. The announcement, made by the national flag carrier on 2 January 2026, signals a significant escalation in the airline's "Vision 2033" strategy. This initiative aims to double the carrier’s current cargo volume and elevate the company into the top three air freight providers globally within the next decade.
The proposed mega-facility is expected to be located at Istanbul Airport, the airline’s primary hub, which has already seen a meteoric rise in the global cargo rankings. By centralising operations and leveraging high-tech automation, the carrier intends to create a logistics ecosystem capable of handling more than 5 million tonnes of freight annually. The project is also a significant domestic economic driver, with Turkish Airlines confirming that the new infrastructure will generate approximately 26,000 new jobs, further supporting the rapid industrial growth of the Turkish aviation sector.
According to reports from Daily Sabah, Caspian Post, and TRT Afrika, this capital expenditure is part of a broader fleet and infrastructure roadmap that will see the airline operate over 800 aircraft by 2033. The strategy is designed to exploit the geographical advantage of Istanbul as a natural bridge between East and West. By integrating the new terminal with its expanding fleet—which recently included a monumental order for 355 Airbus aircraft—Turkish Airlines is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the high-growth intercontinental trade lanes.
The scale of this investment reflects a clear strategic pivot towards the Asia-Pacific region, which remains the world’s fastest-growing air cargo market. As manufacturing hubs in Southeast Asia and China continue to dominate global exports, Turkish Airlines is enhancing its "SmartIST" operational model to provide seamless transit for e-commerce and high-value perishables. The airline has already begun deepening its footprint in the region, recently entering a strategic partnership with Vietnam’s TCS to develop Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City into modern regional hubs, which will feed directly into the new Istanbul terminal.
For the aerospace industry, this move underscores the shifting dynamics of global freight. As traditional European hubs face capacity constraints and stringent environmental regulations, Istanbul is emerging as a more efficient alternative for Asia-bound consignments. The new terminal will feature advanced robotics and automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS), designed to reduce ground handling times for cargo arriving from major Asian production centres. This technological edge is critical for maintaining competitiveness in the high-speed e-commerce sector, which has become a primary driver of the carrier’s 24 per cent year-on-year cargo growth.
The terminal expansion is intrinsically linked to the airline’s aggressive fleet renewal programme. Turkish Airlines CEO Bilal Ekşi recently stated that the carrier aims to be among the world’s top five airlines by 2033, coinciding with the Republic’s centenary. To support this, the airline is transitioning to a younger, more fuel-efficient fleet, including the acquisition of A350F freighters. These aircraft will provide the long-range capability necessary to connect the new Istanbul mega-terminal with secondary cities across the Asia-Pacific and the Americas that were previously underserved by direct freighter flights.
This infrastructure surge comes at a time when the global air cargo market is stabilising after several years of volatility. By investing US$2.3 billion during a period of industrial realignment, Turkish Airlines is betting on a future where Istanbul serves as the central clearinghouse for global trade. With the new terminal set to offer unparalleled capacity, the carrier is not just expanding its own operations but is fundamentally reshaping the logistics map for the aerospace industry across the Eurasia-Pacific corridor.
