Turkiye has offered Indonesia the opportunity to participate in the co-development and co-production of its domestically developed 5th-generation fighter jet, KAAN. The proposal was conveyed during a courtesy visit by Turkiye’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Talip Küçükcan, to Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin on Wednesday (Mar. 5).
According to the Indonesian Ministry of Defence, the meeting reaffirmed the growing strategic partnership between the two countries, particularly in defence industry cooperation. Among the key areas of discussion was the possibility of Indonesia joining Turkiye’s KAAN fighter programme through technology transfer and joint manufacturing.
The KAAN, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), is designed as a stealth-capable multirole fighter with advanced avionics and interoperability with NATO systems. Turkiye has been seeking international partners to support its development and production, and Indonesia is among the countries approached for potential collaboration.
While the offer has been put forward, Indonesia has not confirmed whether it will pursue involvement in the programme. The ministry stated that further discussions will take place within the framework of ongoing bilateral defence cooperation, including through the upcoming 2+2 dialogue between the two nations' defence and foreign ministries.
In addition to the KAAN project, the meeting also addressed other areas of defence collaboration, such as the procurement of frigates and joint training initiatives.
