The U.S. Army has awarded Friday American aerospace and defense giant Lockheed Martin a $4.23 billion contract modification for producing GMLRS munitions, raising the total contract value to $13.27 billion.
Under the agreement, Lockheed Martin will continue manufacturing 400 precision-guided rocket systems until 20 October 2027. The Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, will determine work locations and funding details when each order is issued.
Nicknamed the “70-kilometer sniper rifle,” the GMLRS (Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System) is the primary munition for the combat-proven MLRS launchers, including HIMARS and M270. This all-weather, precision-guided rocket delivers high accuracy, reducing the number of rounds required to neutralize targets.
According to the US Army, the “combat-proven low-cost, low-risk rounds greatly reduce collatera damage and provide tremendous capability and flexibility in addressing today’s threats”.
Fired from both the MLRS M270 and HIMARS launchers—each M270 carrying two pods of six rockets and the HIMARS carrying one—the system provides a persistent, responsive, all-weather, rapidly deployable, long-range, surface-to-surface precision-strike capability.
An Extended-Range GMLRS is also in development, offering a range of up to 150 kilometres in all weather conditions. The ER GMLRS retains compatibility with HIMARS and MLRS M270 launchers while incorporating a larger motor and improved manoeuvrability.
Currently, Lockheed Martin is working with the U.S. Army to increase GMLRS production capacity to 14,000 per year in 2025.
More than 60,000 GMLRS rockets have been produced to date, with a reliability rating exceeding 98 percent.
