White House trade adviser Peter Navarro and Andrea Thompson, the State Department’s Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security , are among those in a high-level delegation that will attend the Farnborough Airshow as part of the United States’ attempts to boost international sales of U.S. weapons and aircraft.
Ever since President Donald Trump launched his “Buy American” initiative, the country has been aggressively promoting U.S. arms and has also relaxed rules relating to export of armed military drones to foreign countries. A high-level group, similar to the one that will attend the upcoming Airshow, attended the Singapore Airshow earlier this year.
According to a Reuters report, the U.S. delegation will also include officials from the Commerce Department, the Air Force and the Pentagon’s weapons export administration. The show will be attended by all the top U.S. defence contractors, including Lockheed Martin, Boeing, GA-ASI, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and General Dynamics.
In In fiscal year 2017, US$42 billion in government-to-government sales and $112 billion in direct commercial sale happened as a result of the increased push for foreign military sales. In the first seven months of 2018, there were US$43.4 billion in sales to other governments, according to the report. Belgium has already been pre-approved by the U.S. government to buy 34 F-35s made by Lockheed in a sale worth more than $6 billion, but the country is yet to decide.
