U.S. Not to Provide F-16s to Ukraine: Biden

U.S. will not be providing F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

President Joe Biden replied in the negaitive to questions on the issue from reporters as he arrived at the White House on Monday. It may be recalled that Reuters had reported last week, quoting Ukraine defense minister Yuriy Sak, that Ukraine, after securing supplies of battle tanks, was looking to get fighter jets such as the F-16.

United States and Germany have promised to send tanks to Ukraine. More weapons look set to be sent to Ukraine after Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on money that “activity aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defense powers is under consultation with our NATO partners.”

France and Australia said Monday they would jointly produce and send several thousand 155 mm artillery shells to Ukraine. Replying to the media on whether France would consider sending fighter jets to Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday that “nothing is excluded.” He however laid out multiple conditions, including that the fighter jets shouldn’t touch Russian soil, lead to an escalation of tensions or weaken the capacities of the French army.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has called for South Korea, a growing arms exporter, to send direct military support to Ukraine.
