U.S. Offers More Black Hawk Helicopters For PH

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Sep 2, 2022 - : 4:04 pm

The United States (U.S.) has proposed to sell 13 to 14 additional Black Hawk helicopters to the Philippines, according to the Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez, recently.

The proposal provides an alternative to the earlier offer in which the Philippines is said to be in talks with the U.S. government to acquire CH-47 Chinook helicopters after the Southeast Asian country canceled the contract with Russia for 16 Mi-17s.

Due to the risk of sanctions from the U.S., the Philippine government decided to drop its plan to acquire Russian-made helicopters in June this year. The Philippine government is currently trying to recover USD38 million that has been paid to Russia from a total contract value of around USD227.35 million.

The Philippines Air Force (PAF) is currently operating a fleet of 15 S-70i Black Hawk utility military helicopters with an additional 32 more that have been ordered in January this year. While these helicopters are a valuable asset to the PAF, the service is reportedly still looking for a different type of helicopter to fulfill a different role than the Black Hawk to expand its airlift capability.

However, previous efforts by the PAF to acquire CH-47 Chinook heavy lifters had to be abandoned due to the lack of funds. With the recent offer, it has been predicted that at most only six CH-47s can be acquired with the same budget that has been allocated for the service.
