UAE Set to Lift Ban on Boeing 737 Max in March

Arun Sivasankaran - : Feb 15, 2021 - : 5:42 pm

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in the UAE is  expected to lift its ban on the Boeing 737 Max in March.

The 737 Max was banned from flying in UAE airspace on March 13, 2019, following the two deadly crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia that killed a total of 346 people.

“The technical committee in the authority is currently working on evaluating the additional requirements that were mentioned in the latest version of the authority’s directive issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA,” Khaleej Times quoted  Saif Al Suwaidim director-general of the GCAA, as saying.  “The evaluation will be completed within a two-week period, after which a safety decision will be issued in mid-February, which will indicate the expected time stage to restart the plane.

For the 737 Max to fly in the UAE airspace, all safety modifications, including the modernization of the MCAS system and pilot training procedures, have to be made, Al Suwaidi said. The recertification by the GCAA is likely to take place next month.

The imminent lifting of the ban is good news for Flydubai, which has 11 Boeing 737 Max 8 and three Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft in its fleet.   The carrier had at the 2017 Dubai Airshow placed an order with Boeing for 175 airplanes, including  Max 8, Max 9 and at least 50 737 Max 10s . he carrier also has purchase rights for 50 additional Max aircraft.

“Flydubai continues to work closely with its regulator, the General Civil Aviation Authority. Flydubai’s Boeing 737 MAX aircraft will not rejoin the operational schedule until it has received regulatory approval by the GCAA,” said a spokesperson from Flydubai.

In recent months, the 737 Max has been recertified to fly in the U.S., Canada, Brazil and Europe. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was the first authority to recertify the aircraft, followed by Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), Transport Canada (TC), European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Britain’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
