UK, EU Ramp Up Aerospace Support As Global Competition Intensifies

The United States faces growing competition from Europe as governments increase investment in aerospace and defense industries to attract manufacturers, strengthen supply chains and create high-skilled jobs.

The European Union highlighted plans to increase defense spending by 8.6% t a record €454 billion (about US$518 billion) in 2026, alongside new national initiatives to expand aerospace investment and create jobs.

The British government on Wednesday unveiled a £600 million (US$803 million) support package for the UK's aerospace sector. The package includes £500 million for aerospace research and technology projects and a new £100 million fund to strengthen domestic aerospace supply chains.

The program will be developed in partnership with major aerospace companies, including Airbus, Rolls-Royce, GKN Aerospace and Safran, as Britain seeks to double the value of its aerospace industry by 2035.

At the Farnborough International Airshow, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger said the state has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in workforce development and industrial sites to attract aerospace and defense manufacturers.

"We want to make sure as we're looking toward the future we don't get complacent as technologies are changing and evolving," Spanberger said, noting Virginia's role as home to the Pentagon and a large concentration of aerospace and defense companies.

Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb also promoted northeast Ohio as a competitive location for aerospace investment, citing the region's manufacturing workforce and the presence of a NASA research center.

"The cost to do business is a lot more affordable in Cleveland than it is in Silicon Valley or the coast or even the South," Bibb said.

The biennial airshow, which runs through July 24, remains one of the aerospace industry's premier events, bringing together aircraft manufacturers, suppliers and defense companies to showcase new technologies, secure business deals and forge international partnerships.
