Princess Anne, the United Kingdom’s Princess Royal, has officially opened a new electro-optics facility at Thermoteknix, a company based in Cambridge that specialises in thermal imaging and infrared-based systems. She also presented the company with the King’s Award for Enterprise in the category of Innovation, recognising its contributions to the development of thermal imaging technology.
Thermoteknix was founded in 1982 by Dr Richard Salisbury, the company’s Managing Director. It employs 75 people and has made significant strides in the field of infrared and thermal imaging. The company made history in 2009 when its thermal imaging cameras were used in NASA’s LCROSS moon landing mission, which discovered lunar subsurface water.
The company has received five prestigious Queen’s and King’s Awards for its innovation and success in international trade. These accolades have highlighted Thermoteknix’s role in promoting the United Kingdom’s reputation as a global leader in design and manufacturing.
During her visit, the Princess Royal toured the company’s headquarters and was shown demonstrations of Thermoteknix’s products, including thermal imaging systems used to reduce industrial carbon emissions and fused night vision goggles that enhance situational awareness and augmented reality capabilities for UK forces.
Accompanied by Mrs Julie Spence, Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridge, the Princess Royal met with Thermoteknix employees from various departments. She formally opened the new electro-optics facility and presented Dr Salisbury with the King’s Award for Enterprise. The visit concluded with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.
The new facility is expected to support Thermoteknix’s growth in response to increasing global demand for its thermal imaging products.
Dr Salisbury expressed his gratitude, stating, “It was an absolute privilege to host Her Royal Highness and to receive the King’s Award for Enterprise. This award is a reflection of the skills, dedication, and commitment of our exceptional staff.” He also highlighted the importance of the award, noting that it represents a significant milestone for the company, which is preparing for further product launches and workforce expansion in the year ahead.
