The U.S. Army flexed its muscles in the ongoing Australia's largest-ever military drills on Wednesday by sinking a maritime target with its Mid-Range Capability (Typhon) system.
The missile system was deployed in Australia for Talisman Sabre 2025, the 11th iteration of the exercise, which involves over 35,000 troops from Australia and allied nations. Running from July 13 to August 4, it is considered the largest and most sophisticated warfighting drill ever held in Australia.
"The deployment of the MRC and successful execution of an SM-6 live fire against a maritime target is another significant step forward in our ability to deploy, integrate, and command and control advanced land-based maritime strike capabilities," Col. Wade Germann, Commander of the 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force (MDTF), said in a statement.
He added: "This exercise validated our targeting and command and control interoperability with our partner unit the Australian 10th Brigade through the Land Effects Coordination Cell. We have set the stage to develop and deploy combat-credible, multi-domain capabilities forward in support of the Combined and Joint Force."
The live fire exercise using the MRC marked the first time the system has been used in the Western Pacific.
Last year, the US Army deployed a Typhon launcher in Northern Luzon in the Philippines as part of a joint training exercise. The system is reportedly still stationed in the region to allow Philippine troops to familiarise themselves with it.
The Typhon is a land-based, ground-launched system capable of firing the Standard Missile 6 (SM-6) and the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile with ranges of more than 240km (150 miles) and 2,500km (1,550 miles), respectively, distances that put the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait within its radius.
Beijing has been protesting the deployment of the Typhon in the Philippines, accusing Manila and Washington of aggravating regional tensions in the South China Sea.
