The United States military has extended its reach deep into the Indo-Pacific to intercept the sanctioned Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) Bertha. In an overnight operation conducted on 24 February 2026, American forces executed a high-stakes maritime interdiction in the Indian Ocean, marking a significant escalation in the enforcement of global trade restrictions. The vessel, which had been tracked for weeks across several thousand nautical miles, was reportedly carrying nearly 1.9 million barrels of crude oil.
The interdiction of the Bertha represents the culmination of an extensive pursuit that began in the Caribbean Sea. According to official statements from the US Department of War—the recently rebranded Department of Defence—the tanker had attempted to evade a blockade established to prevent the movement of illicit oil linked to sanctioned regimes. The vessel was intercepted within the US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) area of responsibility, demonstrating the sustained global endurance of American naval and air assets.
The operation was widely reported by international news outlets, including the Associated Press, Lloyd’s List, and Al Arabiya, which cited official social media updates and Pentagon briefings. Video footage released by military sources depicted helicopters approaching the massive tanker before personnel boarded the vessel. While the Pentagon described the action as a right-of-visit and maritime interdiction, officials have not yet confirmed if the ship has been formally seized or if it will be diverted to a specific port for cargo forfeiture.
For the Asia-Pacific region, the boarding of the Bertha underscores the tightening net around the so-called shadow fleet operating in eastern waters. The tanker, which has previously operated under the alias Monica S and the zombie name Ekta, is linked to Shanghai Legendary Ship Management Company Limited. Industry analysts suggest that the interdiction near the Maldives serves as a clear signal to regional stakeholders that international waters will no longer provide a sanctuary for vessels defying US-led sanctions.
The Department of War stated on social media that three boats ran and now all three have been captured. The military added that no other nation has the global reach, endurance, or will to enforce sanctions at this distance. Highlighting the resolve behind the mission, the department noted that international waters are not a refuge for sanctioned actors. These comments follow a series of similar boardings this month, including the interdiction of the Suezmax tanker Aquila II and the VLCC Veronica III.
The Bertha is a 305,442-dwt vessel built in 2004 and currently flies the Cook Islands flag, though some reports suggest it may be using false registry documents. TankerTrackers.com, an independent monitoring group, noted that the Bertha was the final vessel of an original group of 16 that had attempted to break through naval blockades earlier this year. The persistent tracking of such vessels highlights the integration of satellite intelligence and maritime patrol capabilities to disrupt the financing of sanctioned entities through the global oil trade.
