Senior navy officials from Japan, the United States, and Australia have signed a logistics cooperation deal to boost maritime collaboration and strengthen their commitment to stability and security in the Indo-Pacific.
The signing happened ahead of clarification raised by Elbridge Colby, the U.S. under-secretary of defense for policy, regarding Japan and Canberra's role to play should Washington and China go to war over Taiwan.
Aboard the USS America (LHA-6) during a port visit in Brisbane July 11, Australia, the agreement was signed by Vice Adm. Jeff Jablon, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Installations and Logistics (OPNAV N4); Rear Adm. Naoya Hoshi, Director General of the Logistics Department, Maritime Staff Office, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF); and Commodore Catherine Rhodes, Director General Logistics of the Royal Australian Navy.
Under the agreement, the three countries will work together on missile system reloading and flexible refueling.
"Sustainment in depth is a primary objective," said Jablon in a statement released by the US Navy. "We have robust logistics partnerships with Japan and Australia to ensure we can provide the right material and services at the right place, at the right time to mutually support our maritime forces, from day-to-day training during peacetime through contingencies. This arrangement strengthens those commitments and allows us to more easily share information, technologies and processes for greater logistics resiliency."
While this marks the first time a trilateral logistics agreement has been established under this framework, the navies of these three countries have routinely collaborated on bilateral logistics efforts for several years. Since 2019, RAN and U.S. Navy forces have supported missile reloading for each other's warships in the Indo-Pacific region.
Hoshi, for his part, said Tokyo is excited about the chance to collaborate more closely with our U.S. and Australian partners. "This new arrangement will allow us to broaden the scope and increase the efficiency of our interactions," he said.
The signing took place just before the official start of Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025, the largest exercise held in Australia between the United States and Australia.
Reports released by the Financial Times Saturday cited the Pentagon has urged Tokyo and Canberra as to what role they will play should conflict erupt in Taiwan.
There was no immediate response from the two countries, but Rhodes said following the signing of the deal, they see clear opportunities to work trilaterally with U.S. and Japanese partners on logistics initiatives. "These efforts facilitate our speed of response for the full range of naval actions in the Indo-Pacific, from routine sustainment through crisis," he said.
Beijing views Taiwan as part of China and plans to reunify it by force if necessary.
