United States has announced the launching of $151 billion worth missile defense program that aims to protect America from foreign threats, reports said Saturday.

The program, SHIELD (Scalable Homeland Innovative Enterprise Layered Defense), informally known as the Golden Dome, was meant to protect against the full spectrum of modern missile threats, including ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic systems.

The Financial Times, which first reported the development, cited it will incorporate a fusion of land-based interceptors, persistent space-based sensors, advanced radar arrays, and an AI-driven command and control architecture.

Michael Guetlein, a retired U.S. Space Force General, has been appointed to lead a new federal missile defense authority headquartered at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.

Redstone, already a key hub for U.S. missile and aerospace development, will play a central role in coordinating national defense efforts to counter current and emerging long-range threats.

Designed not only to defend against traditional Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs), the program will detect and neutralize next-generation threats from Russia, North Korea, China, and Iran—threats that legacy systems are not equipped to handle.

While no specific contracts have yet been awarded, defense contractors like the Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, and General Atomics are anticipated to compete for SHIELD contracts.

In May this year, US President Donald Trump named a Space Force general to head the ambitious programme aimed at blocking threats specifically from China and Russia.

First ordered by Trump in January, the program aims to build a satellite network to detect, track, and intercept incoming missiles.

“Golden Dome will “protect our homeland,” Trump said, adding that Canada had said it wanted to be part of it.

Israel was the first country to develop and operate the Iron Dome system, designed to intercept rockets, artillery shells, and mortars.
