The United States State Department has approved a significant Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Bahrain, authorising a sustainment and equipment package for its F-16 fleet valued at approximately US$445 million. This development underscores the continued strategic relevance of the F-16 Fighting Falcon platform, a mainstay fighter for numerous air forces across the globe, including key operators in the Asia-Pacific region.
The comprehensive package is designed to bolster Bahrain's operational readiness and includes a wide array of essential logistics and support items. The Kingdom has requested the purchase of aircraft components, missile containers, radar receiver component parts, and guidance and control section spares. Furthermore, the deal covers weapons system support, ground handling equipment, and laboratory instruments. These additions will supplement a previously implemented case valued at US$47 million, bringing the total sustainment effort to a substantial level that reflects the high operational tempo and maintenance requirements of modern fourth-generation fighter fleets.
According to a press release issued by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 1 December 2025, the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale has been delivered. The agency noted that this proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a Major Non-NATO Ally. The principal contractors for this sustainment programme will be General Electric Aerospace, based in Ohio, and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics of Fort Worth, Texas.
While this transaction specifically concerns Bahrain, the scale and nature of the sustainment package offer critical insights for defence planners in the Asia-Pacific. The region is home to some of the world's largest and most advanced F-16 fleets, with South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia all relying on the platform for air superiority and multi-role missions. The valuation of US$445 million for sustainment and spares highlights the rising costs associated with maintaining high availability rates for fourth-generation fighters, a budgetary reality that Asian air forces must factor into their long-term modernisation roadmaps.
Furthermore, the involvement of Lockheed Martin and General Electric in this major sustainment contract reinforces the stability of the global F-16 supply chain. For Asia-Pacific operators, many of whom are currently upgrading their fleets to the F-16V 'Viper' standard or integrating new Block 70/72 aircraft, the continued flow of spares and manufacturer support is vital. The deal suggests a robust production line for consumables and rotables, which indirectly benefits the Asian user group by ensuring that the global logistics pipeline remains active and prioritised by US defence giants.
Bahrain holds the distinction of being the first customer to procure the F-16 Block 70, the most advanced configuration of the aircraft. This sustainment deal ensures that the Royal Bahraini Air Force can effectively absorb and operate its modernised fleet, maintaining a credible deterrent in the Middle East. The DSCA stated that Bahrain will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces and that the sale will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
For the wider international defence community, this sale is a reminder that while fifth-generation platforms like the F-35 garner headlines, the sustainment market for fourth-generation assets remains a lucrative and essential sector. As air forces in both the Middle East and Asia-Pacific pursue dual-fleet strategies—operating legacy fighters alongside stealth platforms—the demand for comprehensive maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) packages is projected to grow steady over the coming decade.
