Vietnamese low-cost carrier Vietjet has announced the strategic resumption of direct services from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Con Dao, an island archipelago with significant dual-use infrastructure and national security relevance off Vietnam's southern coast.
Commencing on 3 December 2025, the initial services will offer one daily return flight from both major hubs. In a clear signal of anticipated robust demand, this frequency is slated to double to two daily return flights per route starting from 15 December 2025, substantially enhancing connectivity to the strategically positioned island.
This expansion by Vietjet, a major player in the rapidly evolving Asia-Pacific aviation sector, follows significant governmental planning focused on developing the island's economic and defensive capabilities. Con Dao Airport (VCS) is a key asset, operating as a joint civilian and military airfield, which provides a crucial logistics and air defence foothold in Vietnam's southern maritime zone. Furthermore, the Vietnamese government has previously committed to upgrade and expand the airport, a project with a total investment estimated at approximately VND1.6 trillion (around US$66.9 million), aimed at enabling it to handle larger commercial aircraft like the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 models. This civilian-military expansion aligns with Vietnam's broader national strategy to modernise infrastructure for both economic growth and enhanced national security posture in the region.
The original press release, issued on 27 November 2025, focused on the attractive leisure opportunities this route resumption offers, particularly to international visitors connecting via Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Vietjet has made these routes highly accessible, offering promotional one-way fares starting from approximately SGD 24 (around US$18.50, excluding taxes and fees). Such aggressive pricing, which is a hallmark of the low-cost model, effectively subsidises travel to a location of national interest, further integrating the remote island into the national transport network. The increase in airlift capacity serves not only the burgeoning eco-tourism market—Con Dao is a protected marine area known for its biodiversity and historical sites—but also bolsters the logistical throughput for governmental and defence personnel.
This move underscores a wider trend in the Asia-Pacific where civilian aviation expansion and military strategic interests increasingly converge, particularly concerning remote islands and coastal outposts. The capacity increase on the Con Dao routes by Vietjet contributes directly to Vietnam's goal of building a robust, self-reliant aerospace and defence industrial base by 2030, a key plank in its defence modernisation programme. As Vietnam continues to strengthen its air transport industry—a sector the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam aims to make a strategic economic pillar by 2035—the enhanced accessibility of dual-use facilities like Con Dao's airport highlights a critical, often interlinked, dynamic shaping the region's geopolitical landscape and aviation market development.
