Vietnam to Acquire Barak 8 Missile Systems From Israel

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Aug 22, 2022 - : 5:44 pm

A delegation from Vietnam’s Defense Ministry will be visiting Israel in September to advance the USD500 million purchase of the Barak 8 Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) systems made by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

Led by the deputy commander of the Vietnam People’s Air Force (VPAF), the visit will highlight Vietnam’s interests in the Israeli-made air defense systems after acquiring the SPYDER short and medium-range mobile SAM. Made by another Israeli defense company, Rafael, Vietnam acquired five SPYDER missile systems for USD600 million in 2015.

Vietnam is reported to purchase three Barak 8 SAM systems from IAI.

Barak 8 SAM system is a joint project between India and Israel to develop a medium to long-range air defense missile effective against any type of airborne threat. The system is designed to combat aircraft, helicopters, drones, cruise missiles as well as ballistic missiles.

With a length of about 4.5 meters, 0.94 meters wingspan, the main body’s diameter of 0.225 meters, and 0.54 meters of the booster stage, each Barak 8 missile weighs around 275 kg including a 60 kg warhead.

Featuring an active radar seeker, two-way datalink, and thrust vectoring control, depending on the version, the missile has a maximum speed of about Mach 3 (Medium-Range/MR), or Mach 2 (Long-Range/MR). Its maximum range is stated as between 70 km (MR) to 100 km (LR).

Deployed in Vertical Launch (VL) configuration, each launcher module consists of eight Barak 8 missiles.
