Women In Aviation International Launches Singapore Chapter

: Mar 31, 2021 - : 2:33 am

Women in Aviation International (WAI) has inaugurated its Singapore Chapter, WAI SG, its first in Southeast Asia.

The organization’s mission is to build on the values of diversity and inclusiveness by encouraging more women to create an impact in the industry, benefitting the Singapore aviation and aerospace industry ecosystem.

Dr Amy Khor, Singapore Senior Minister of State in the Ministry for Transport and Ministry for Sustainability and the Environment, was the Guest-of-Honour at the launch of the Singapore Chapter, which was held on Tuesday at the Singapore Aviation Academy. Other guests included Kevin Shum, Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, and the Singapore chapter’s 31 founding members, including three men.

The newly-created chapter aims to facilitate powerful networks among key aviation stakeholders, increase visibility of women in aviation, and support outreach and STEM activities. WAI SG will offer mentorship programmes and scholarships for young women keen on embarking on a career in the aviation and aerospace industry.

“We are pleased to see such great enthusiasm at the early stage of the founding of the chapter in Singapore,” said said Marie-Louise Philippe, President of the Singapore Chapter of WAI. “We have seen a strong endorsement from key stakeholders who are very supportive to the cause of raising the visibility of women in the industry. Committed to promoting diversity and inclusiveness of women in the local aviation and aerospace ecosystem, our ambition is to empower more woman in thinking about global mobility and connecting them to WAI’s worldwide network of 14,000 members.”

In September, WAI SG will organise a “Girls In Aviation Day” for primary and secondary schoolgirls to learn more about the disciplines of aviation and STEM.

Women in Aviation International (WAI) has a diverse and inclusive membership that  spans from astronauts, to corporate and airine pilots, maintenance technicians, engineers, air traffic controllers, business owners, educators, journalists, flight attendants, high school and university students, air show performers, airport managers, and others.
