Zhuhai 2018: China’s Biggest Airshow Offers A Treat

: Nov 5, 2018 - : 5:37 pm

The 2018 edition of China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition in Zhuhai, Guangdong, is expected to bring in a “special surprise” with the ”strongest lineup” of almost every model of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force aircraft.

The six-day event opening at Zhuhai Jinwan Airport from November 6 will feature a new look and new formations of China’s most advanced stealth fighter jet, J-20.

According to PLA Air Force spokesperson Shen Jinke, China’s independently developed heavy-lift multi-purpose transport aircraft Y-20 will also conduct flight performances.

For static displays, the PLA will bring the likes of the H-6K bomber, the KJ-500 early warning aircraft, the J-10B fighter jet, the Y-9 transportation aircraft and the Z-10K helicopter, Shen said.

Aerial defence and anti-missile equipment, including the HQ-9B and the HQ-22, is also joining the show.

The brand-new GJ-2 unmanned aerial vehicles will make their first appearance at the air show. The domestically-developed GJ-2 is a medium- and high-altitude, long-endurance reconnaissance-strike drone, which has played an important role in border patrol and the anti-terrorism fight.

The Bayi Aerobatics Team of the PLA Air Force and the Red Falcon Air Demonstration Team of the PLA Air Force Aviation University in Changchun, Northeast China’s Jilin Province is joining foreign performance teams in the sky at the show.

Chinese papers have also revealed that a novel tiltrotor drone, developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp and codenamed the CH-10, will have its maiden flight at the airshow as well.

The CH-10 is a new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) integrating helicopter technologies on a largely fixed-wing frame so that it can take off and land vertically and hover in midair, while also being able to cruises at high speeds for an extended range.

Several other warplanes and civil aircraft from home and abroad have already descended on the city.

The 12th edition of Airshow China is an international aerospace trade show endorsed by the central government. The show has been held every two years since 1996 in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province. The show was originally designed as a place for displaying only aircraft yet it has grown into a defence exhibition showcasing China’s most up-to-date military equipment. The 2016 Airshow China included participants from 42 countries with a total of US$40 billion worth of deals struck.

November 11, the concluding day, marks the 69th anniversary of China’s PLA Air Force’s founding, and the air force plans to share its birthday present with the public at a variety of celebration activities.
