Turkey’s TAIS Testing Caspian Waters

: May 24, 2018 - : 6:28 pm

TAIS is showcasing a large portfolio of naval ships at KADEX, with special focus on the patrol boats for the Central Asian region. “There are huge opportunities in this region especially with Kazakhstan navy in the Caspian Sea,” says Dogan Bescan, a senior official of TAIS, tells Daily News.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, in 1991, the four new countries that emerged around the northern Caspian shore— Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan—along with their southern neighbour Iran have been developing their offshore hydrocar- bon reserves. This scramble for natural resources has, in turn, raised the question of how best to safeguard them—a growing concern all over the world in an age of intensifying transnational terrorist threats.

Kazakhstan is planning to expand the network of anti-terrorism headquarters in the country by establishing an operational naval headquarters covering the Caspian Sea. To seize the opportunity, companies such as TAIS are exploring the possibilities to hard sell patrol and intervention vessels, and search and rescue boats (SAR) for ensuring a safe sea.

TAIS is offering a range of patrol boats and SARs to the countries in the region. “The Patrol Boat (PB) plays a major role in ensuring the safety of shipping as well as the preservation of the marine environment. The vessel focusses on illegal drug traffic, piracy, terror, performing search and rescue duties,” he says, pointing at the model on display.

Referring to the SAR, he says it has a wide range of skills and is capable of carrying out different duties but primarily open sea rescue. “The boat is built as steel hull and aluminium superstructure. The hull of the boat is designed to ensure good seakeeping qualities at high speed and would be capable of maintaining a reasonable speed in adverse weather conditions. The vessel, with 2 main engines and 2FPP propulsion systems has accommodation and facilities for 20 persons,” he adds.

TAIS is established by the owners of five leading shipyards of Turkey—SEDEF Shipyard, Anadolu Shipyard, Istanbul Shipyard, Selah Shipyard, and Sefine Shipyard.
