Indonesia To Acquire, Co-Produce Turkish UCAVs.

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Feb 10, 2023 - : 3:49 pm

The Indonesian Ministry of Defense (Kementerian Pertahanan / Kemhan) will acquire an unknown quantity of Turkish-made Baykar’s Bayraktar TB2 and TAI’s Anka Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs). This acquisition will also pave the way to co-produce these drones in the state-owned PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) manufacturing facilities at Bandung, West Java.

The process has recently received a green light from the Indonesian Ministry of Finance (Kementerian Keuangan / Kemenkeu). This follows a request from the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) to acquire UCAVs with loans from foreign sources. Both the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) and the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) will be the operators of these drones with funds allocated for TNI-AU as much as USD200 million for the drones, and USD38.115 for their weapons, while TNI-AL receives up to USD100 million, and USD10.89 million respectively.

While there was no mention of what weapons that will be acquired to arm these drones, it has been known for some time that TNI has shown a keen interest in Roketsan’s MAM-L and MAM-C smart micro munitions. With ranges of up to 8 km (MAM-C) and 15 km (MAM-L), these laser-guided glide bombs are designed to be carried by small aerial platforms like UCAVs and light attack aircraft.
