The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) will hold this year’s Super Garuda Shield (SGS) Joint Exercise across three locations in Indonesia: Situbondo, East Java; Baturaja, South Sumatra; and Karawang, West Java. The exercise is an annual multilateral military exercise conducted by the TNI in collaboration with the United States armed forces and other participating countries’ military.
“The Super Garuda Shield will occur from 26 August 2024 to 5 September 2024. The (amphibious) landing will be in Situbondo, followed by the paratrooper jump in Karawang, and the accelerated shooting in Baturaja. This is still in the concept and planning stages,” stated the Head of the TNI Information Centre (Kapuspen), Major General Nugraha Gumilar in TNI Headquarters in Cilangkap, Jakarta, on Wednesday (Jul. 3) as quoted by Antara.
A final planning meeting for the Joint Super Garuda Shield Exercise was held on 29 April 2024 with representatives from the participating countries. It has been confirmed that at least 19 countries will be involved, including Australia, Japan, India, Canada, South Korea, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Singapore, Malaysia, Timor Leste, Vietnam, and Thailand.
Preparations for the Joint Super Garuda Shield Exercise have been ongoing, involving both the TNI and delegations from participating nations. These preparations have included surveying training locations and terrain orientation. Field orientation was conducted at the Baluran Combat Training Centre in Situbondo, East Java, on 23 April 2024 which will serve as one of the training sites for the exercise.
In the 2024 Super Garuda Shield Joint Exercise, soldiers from the Indonesian Navy’s 5th Marine Infantry Battalion are set to hold an amphibious landing exercise at Banongan Beach, Situbondo, alongside US soldiers from the Indo-Pacific Command (US INDOPACOM).
US INDOPACOM Commander Admiral Samuel John Paparo Jr., during his visit to Jakarta on 12 June 2024, stated that the US will deploy nearly 2,000 soldiers for the 2024 Super Garuda Shield Joint Exercise. Samuel also expressed his intention to personally review the exercise with TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto.
“I’m really looking forward to this. I’m looking forward to returning to Indonesia to meet my friend General Agus, and this will be the most interoperable exercise we’ve ever held together, and the one that involves the most US soldiers training with soldiers from Indonesia and other participating countries,” Paparo said.
