Myth of Superiority
The Russian invasion of Ukraine is now an unmitigated disaster, with
the besieged nation fighting back to conclusively destroy the myth of
Russian military superiority. The recent sinking of the flagship of
Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, the missile cruiser ‘Moskva’, purportedly by
a Ukrainian missile strike, is an event, that few would have thought
even remotely possible, at the start of this conflict. The surprising
inability of Russian troops to secure even a major conclusive victory
after weeks of combat operations, not only casts a shadow on their
training but also on the effectiveness of their military equipment, which
is in service in large numbers in the Indo Pacific region.
Russian military equipment remains in widespread use in many parts
of the world, but even the most loyal customers, are sure to have a
rethink, due to their poor performance in the war with Ukraine. It will
also be interesting to ascertain the impact on Chinese defence
exports, as many nations will have to rethink the acquisition of
low-end defence equipment, which becomes cannon fodder during a
conflict. Rather than show pieces, such as fighter jets, attack
helicopters and warships; modern Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM),
Man Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPADS) and armed
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), have had a disproportionate impact
on the battlefield, to the detriment of Russian forces.
For nations in the SE-Asia region, which have remained loyal
customers of Russian defence equipment, will now have no choice but
to finally wean themselves away from Russian military equipment.
Apart from Western suppliers of high-end defence equipment, the
immediate victors are likely to be countries like Israel, Turkey, and
South Korea, which have strong defence exports. It is difficult to see
how Russia’s defence industry can recover from this blow to their
reputation.
