Air Japan Launches Tokyo-Bangkok Route

Our Bureau - : Feb 10, 2024 - : 11:25 pm

Air Japan, a newly established subsidiary of All Nippon Airways (ANA) Holdings, initiated flight operations between Narita Airport, located near Tokyo, and Bangkok, Thailand on Friday (Feb. 9). The new airline brand specializes in middle-distance international routes, positioning itself as a hybrid between full-service and low-cost carriers.

During the inaugural flight ceremony, Air Japan’s President and CEO, Mineguchi Hideki, emphasized the company’s preparations amid the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic. The airline noted that it has a 96 percent reservation rate for this route, consisting mainly of Thai travelers visiting Japan.

In contrast to Japan’s major full-service carriers like All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines, which offer in-flight meals and premium class options, low-cost carriers are gaining traction in the industry by providing budget-friendly fares with fewer amenities.

Given the pandemic’s impact on business travel demand, Air Japan mostly targets the tourism sector, particularly in Southeast Asia, focusing on Thailand. In 2019, Japan welcomed over 1.2 million tourists from Thailand, the highest number from any Southeast Asian nation.

To cater to these travelers, the airline has implemented various initiatives. While it exclusively offers economy-class seating, its seat pitch is similar to that of full-service carriers, offering more space than typical low-cost carriers.

Furthermore, Air Japan’s in-flight dining options feature Japanese cuisine, popular among Thai passengers, to enhance the overall travel experience.

The Tokyo-Bangkok Route is being served by the airline’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.
