Banyuwangi to Become Indonesia’s Newest Umrah Flights’ Hub

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Jan 15, 2024 - : 6:12 pm

To provide convenience and extra services for Umrah pilgrims in the area, the Banyuwangi International Airport (BWX) in Indonesia’s East Java province will soon become the country’s newest hub for Umrah flights. The plan to open the airport as the newest Umrah hub has been underway for some time and the regency’s stakeholders are optimistic that it will be realized in 2024.

“Hopefully everything goes smoothly as expected so that the people of Banyuwangi and the surrounding area can more easily carry out the Umrah pilgrimage,” said Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani on Sunday (Jan. 14).

Umrah is a non-obligatory but important pilgrimage for Muslims to visit Mecca in Saudi Arabia which can be undertaken at any time of the year. It is different from the Hajj pilgrimage which can only be performed on specific dates according to the Islamic lunar calendar.

However, due to the unavailability of a direct flight route to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the Umrah flights from Banyuwangi will have to make a transit stop at another intermediate airport for the time being.

“There are three options […], first transit in Malaysia, Singapore, or Thailand. This is very possible because Banyuwangi Airport already has international status. It’s just a matter of agreement later,” said Executive General Manager (EGM) PT Angkasa Pura II Banyuwangi International Airport Johan Seno Acton.

He further added that the flights from Banyuwangi will use either Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 aircraft which will later be connected to a Saudi Airlines plane to Jeddah.

“Hopefully everything goes smoothly and can be realized soon this year,” said Johan.

In the official government records, the number of Umrah pilgrims from the regency and its surrounding area reached more than 12 thousand pilgrims in 2023.
