Boeing Delays 777X Launch After Ethiopia Crash

: Mar 11, 2019 - : 6:26 am

Boeing has delayed plans to roll out its huge new 777X jetliner after the Nairobi-bound Boeing 737 MAX 8 operated by Ethiopian Airlines crashed minutes after takeoff from Addis Adaba. All 157 passengers on board were killed.

The disaster happened less than five months after another 737 MAX 8, operated by Lion Air, went down off the coast of Indonesiain late October, killing 189 people.

Boeing announced last week that the 777X, which can carry as many as 425 passengers, would make its “debut to the world”. The event was set to take place on Wednesday 13 March at Boeing’s Everett plant in Washington. The 777-9, which is the larger of the two GE Aviation GE9X-powered 777X family variants, is due to enter service in 2020.

But a Boeing spokesman said late Sunday that the company is storiesponing the 777X’s big reveal. He didn’t say when the event is now likely to take place but added that there are no other changes to the aircraft’s schedule.
