A Citilink flight in Indonesia had to return to its departure airport due to a pilot’s health emergency after only 15 minutes airborne on Thursday (21 July). Promptly after landing, the pilot was evacuated and rushed to the hospital where he later passed away.

Flight QG307 from Surabaya to Ujung Pandang departed as scheduled at 06.00 WIB (UTC +7). After approximately 15 minutes in the air, the flight landed again in Surabaya because our pilot had a health emergency,” said Dewa Kadek Rai, President Director of PT Citilink Indonesia in an official statement. “The plane has landed again at 07.00 WIB at Juanda International Airport, Surabaya, well and safely.”

“Based on the results of the doctor’s examination from the local hospital, it was conveyed that our pilot was declared deceased,” Dewa further continues that Citilink management expressed their deepest condolences to the pilot’s family and that the deceased was known as a good pilot and highly dedicated to his job.

“The deceased will be flown directly today from Surabaya to Jakarta and the body will be buried in Jakarta in accordance with the applicable procedures,” he added.

All the passengers have been transferred to another flight that took off at 10:46 WIB after they received explanations and were provided with on-ground service from the airline.

“To ensure the safety and comfort of passengers, Citilink Indonesia has replaced the aircraft and the entire crew, and the flight has been flown back at 10.46 WIB,” Dewa said.

Citilink has yet to release further information surrounding the cause of death of the pilot.

The airline mostly operates routes between Indonesian cities with only a handful of international routes with its fleet of Airbus A320-200, A320neo, ATR 72-600, and Boeing 737-500 aircraft.
