All roads seem to be leading to Japan as organisers of the second edition of DSEI Japan announced Thursday that the show has been “sold out.”
The show, which is set to take place from 15-17 March 2023, in Makuhari Messe, Tokyo, is anticipated to be bigger than the inaugural one, with exhibitors from more than 60 countries. DSEI Japan is the only large-scale, fully integrated defence event to take place in Japan, providing unprecedented levels of access into the Japanese and wider Asia-Pacific market.
James Samuel, Director, DSEI Japan, says: “DSEI Japan 2023 offers an unparalleled opportunity for defence equipment suppliers to meet with Japanese decision makers to work together on the air, land and maritime programmes that will reinforce Japan’s military capabilities and promote stability in the region.”
National export capabilities will also be in focus, with official international pavilions from Israel, France, Germany, USA, Canada, Italy, Australia and the United Kingdom, among others.
Japan invests heavily in the defence and security of its people and property. The country has a large and sophisticated Self Defence Force consisting of the Ground Self Defence Force, the Maritime Self Defence Force, and the Air Self Defence Force. The Japan Police Force includes 300,000 officers country-wide.
Last December, the Japanese government, led by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, announced a massive increase in defence spending, going from roughly 1.1 per cent of GDP to 2 per cent of GDP by 2027. Tokyo will spend roughly US$320 billion over five years, and the defence budget will reach roughly $80-90 billion by 2027 — placing Japan third in the world for defence spending, behind only the United States and China.
The organisers feel that with a record-breaking increase in the Japanese defence budget, Japan’s engagement with external partners is set to increase dramatically.
“The revitalisation of their military forces, bringing them to the forefront of regional capabilities, necessitates greater communication with international trading partners. It also poses significant challenges around achieving operational capability in key areas and ensuring interoperability with existing platforms and allies. “Responding to this new growth, DSEI Japan 2023 will examine the challenges of delivering security in Asia and its surrounding waters. This encompasses alliances and cooperation both within the region and further afield,” the organisers say.
