First BrahMos Battery for The Philippines to Arrive This Month

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Jan 2, 2024 - : 11:41 pm

The Philippine Marine Corps (PMC) is expecting to receive the first delivery of an India-made BrahMos Shore-Based Anti-Ship Missile (SBASM) battery in the coming days. The delivery is part of the acquisition of three SBASM batteries worth around USD375 million which contract was signed in January 2022.

These BrahMos batteries will be operated by the PMC Coastal Defense Regiment and will likely be deployed on the parts of the Philippines archipelago facing the West Philippine Sea – the Philippines’ name for the South China Sea.

The Philippines along with several other Southeast Asia nations are currently involved in a sea territorial dispute with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) due to the latter’s aggressive and unilateral claim of most of the West Philippine Sea / South China Sea area. In early December last year, Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessels attempted to disrupt the Philippines’ vessels carrying resupply for PMC troops stationed in the Second Thomas Shoal, a move that escalated into diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

With the acquisition of these missile batteries, the Philippines hopes to provide a cover for these resupply vessels and to provide an effective deterrent against any foreign naval incursion coming from the area.

The BrahMos missile is a joint India-Russia project based on the Russian P-800 Oniks supersonic Anti-Ship Missile (AShM). Developed in four different versions (ship, submarine, air, and land-launched variants), the missile entered the Indian Armed Forces’ active service starting in 2005.

A BrahMos SBASM battery has three missile launchers. Each missile weighs up to 3,000 kg and is armed with a 300 kg warhead. With a maximum speed of around Mach 2.8, each missile is capable of performing a sea-skimming flight with a maximum range of about 280 km.
