The Indonesian flag carrier airline, Garuda Indonesia, unveiled plans to expand its aircraft fleet with the procurement of eight new planes slated for delivery throughout 2024 on Tuesday (Apr. 2). This strategic move aims to bolster the airline’s operational capacity, with a focus on enhancing both domestic and international routes.
As reported by the Jakarta Post, among the newly acquired aircraft are the Boeing 737-800 NG, Boeing 777-300ER, and Airbus A330-300. This addition will position Garuda Indonesia to reach a total fleet size of 80 aircraft by the end of the year.
Irfan Setiaputra, President Director of Garuda Indonesia, highlighted the company’s ambitious goals during a recent announcement. He emphasized that the addition of these aircraft is designed to optimize the airline’s occupancy rates while further expanding its network coverage. The objective is to strengthen the airline’s position in the aviation market, offering passengers enhanced connectivity and service options.
According to a report by Antara, Irfan Setiaputra disclosed that Garuda Indonesia successfully operated 145,500 flights in 2023, representing a notable 38 percent increase compared to the previous year. This surge in flight operations underscores the airline’s commitment to meeting growing travel demands and facilitating seamless travel experiences for passengers.
In financial terms, Garuda Indonesia witnessed substantial growth in revenue during the past year. The state-owned airline recorded total revenue of US$2.94 billion in 2023, marking a 40 percent increase compared to the previous year. This financial performance can be attributed to various factors, including a significant uptick in scheduled flight sales, which saw a 41 percent year-on-year increase, amounting to $2.37 billion.
The surge in sales can be largely attributed to heightened demand for air travel following the easing of pandemic restrictions. Notably, sales for passenger-only scheduled flights experienced an even more remarkable growth rate of 52 percent.
