Germany will buy 38 Eurofighter jets from Airbus for the country’s air force through a contract worth 5.4 billion euro (US$6.35 billion).
The German parliament’s budget committee has given the green signal. The deal is part of the German defence ministry’s long-term plan to acquire up to 93 Eurofighter jets along with 45 F-18s from Boeing.
A decision on the purchase of the remaining fighters is expected after Germany’s federal election next year.
“The decision of the German Bundestag to purchase 38 Eurofighter known as the Quadriga Project is a strong signal not only to German Airforce but also to Europe, especially to the European defence industry,” said Dirk Hoke, Chief Executive Officer, Airbus Defence and Space. “It is also an important signal towards export campaigns as for example in Switzerland and in Finland where we demonstrate.”
According to Hoke, the new “Eurofighter Tranche 4” is the best and most modern fighter aircraft that Europe currently has to offer. The first-generation Eurofighters have been in service since 2004.
With the new aircraft, Germany’s air force will now have a “multi-role capable aircraft,” which can be used not only against enemy aircraft but also against targets on the ground. The new fighter aircraft will be equipped with the most modern radar technology.
“This important decision strengthens our capabilities in the air force,” said Ingo Gerhartz, inspector general of the German AirForce. “By replacing Tranche 1, which is obsolete and susceptible to repairs, we are increasing the operational readiness of the Eurofighter fleet and thus our reliability in the [NATO] alliance.”
Gerhartz added that this would be “a huge technological step forward in digitalization.”
“We are delighted that the German parliament’s announced its commitment to the German Air Force Tranche 1 Replacement Programme (Quadriga),” said Herman Claesen, CEO of Eurofighter GmbH. “Securing Quadriga is excellent news for the entire Eurofighter enterprise. We look forward to signing a contract with our customer in the near future.”
Germany’s ruling grand coalition government as well as the Free Democratic party (FDP), and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party voted in favor of the billion-dollar purchase. The Left party voted against the deal, and the Greens abstained.
According to Airbus, the Eurofighter Typhoon is the world’s most modern swing-role fighter. Once conceived as a multi-national program to modernize the Air Forces of the European industrial partner nations, the Eurofighter Typhoon has been sold to five additional customers (Austria, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sultanate of Oman, Kuwait and Qatar) and thus doubled the number of its original user nations.
The fighter jet is powered by two EJ200 engines that give the Eurofighter Typhoon its impressive thrust-to-weight ratio and maneuverability. The core of this state-of-the-art weapon system is its identification capability and sensor fusion, based on the CAPTOR-E AESA radar and the PIRATE FLIR sensor while being protected by the PRAETORIAN Electronic Defensive Aid Sub System (DASS). No other fighter aircraft has integrated a comparably high number of European and U.S. weapons and is thus combat ready whatever the mission.
The Eurofighter Typhoon, Europe’s largest military collaborative program, is one of the most advanced new generation multi-role/swing-role combat aircraft available on the market. It represents the peak of British, German, Italian and Spanish collaborative technology in avionics, aerodynamics, materials, manufacturing techniques and engines.
Eurofighter Typhoon is the only fighter to offer wide-ranging operational capabilities while at the same time delivering unparalleled fleet effectiveness.
