In 2019, We Will Accelerate Growth: Cebu Pacific

: Feb 1, 2019 - : 2:06 am

Cebu Pacific celebrated the delivery of the airline’s first A321neo at the Makati, Shangri-La, Manila.

The aircraft which was delivered on January 21st is already in service in the domestic circle and is expected to be soon used for destinations like Denpasar and Narita.

“The order for 32 A321neo is one of the largest amongst the south east Asian carriers. We are pleased to announce that the 1st of out 32 orders have already arrived and has already entered into service,” said Cebu Pacific President and CEO, Lance Gokongwei, who was speaking at the event. “Despite lingering headwinds, such as rising fuel price, competition, customer expectation, volatility, and other external risk, we at Cebu Pacific firmly believe that now is a good time to expand and harness growth. 2019 will accelerate growth”.

The airline is set to receive 12 brand new aircraft in 2019, to support the carrier’s expansion plans this year. Deliveries include – six Airbus A321neo, five A320neo, and an ATR 72-600.

Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engine, the airline’s new A321neo boasts of 326 seats. “The A321neo offers 236 seats. That is 56 more seats, 31 per cent more capacity versus A320. This will allow us to offer more seats, using the same slot. So we increase seats without adding frequencies,” added Gokongwei.

Pratt & Whitney will also provide Cebu Pacific with a 10-year EngineWise® service agreement to support engine performance services and maximize aircraft availability.

“We are very excited to add the first GTF-powered A321neo to the Cebu Pacific fleet. The aircraft will enable us to increase capacity on popular routes, while at the same time benefiting from the lowest operating costs in this size story_category,” he said.

The airline said that re-fleeting was a necessity to ensure operational efficiency and harness growth potential that considers aircraft arrivals and our network plan. “CEB operates one of the youngest fleets in the world, with an average age being only 5 years and 2 weeks.”

“Cebu Pacific is expanding rapidly and plays an important part in the transformation of the Philippines’ aviation sector and has played a key role in supporting tourism, trade and business links between the Philippines, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East,” said Jean Francois Laval, Executive Vice President for Sales in Asia of Airbus.

To support expansion plans, Cebu Pacific has also leased five Airbus A320neo powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines.

“Cebu Pacific previously flew DC-9 aircraft with Pratt & Whitney’s JT8D engines, and we are proud to be powering the airline’s next generation aircraft,” said Rick Deurloo, senior vice president of sales, marketing and customer support at Pratt & Whitney. “We are confident that the clean, fuel-efficient geared fan technology will provide Cebu Pacific with economic and environmental advantages for many years to come.”

According to a FlightGlobal report, the airline has also sent out and RFI in late 2018 to Airbus and Boeing and discussions with the manufacturers will take place this quarter. Thereafter, it expects to launch a request for proposal for the widebody jets in the middle of the year.

The aircraft are expected to be delivered from the end of 2020 or in 2021. They will support growth in slot-constrained markets rather than the expansion of the airline’s long-haul network.
