India Offering Growing Defence Portfolio to Philippines

India’s state-owned Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSU), the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and private Indian defence firms, are showcasing a wide-array of defence equipment at the show. The DRDO is showcasing its ‘Made in India’ products, technologies and systems at ADAS.

Some of the DRDO products that have been attracting interest in Manila, at the show are its Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) system, a scale model of which is on display; the Pinaka Multi Barrel Rocket Launching (MBRL) system, an all-weather indirect fire, free flight, artillery weapon system capable of delivering a large volume of fire in a very short time for neutralizing critical and sensitive enemy targets; Akash i Short-Range Surface to Air Missile (SAM) system to protect vulnerable areas; the Torpedo Advanced Light (TAL), an electrically propelled self-homing torpedo that can be launched from ship and rotary wing aircraft. It has both active and passive modes of operations, and all digital control and guidance systems. It can attack submarines in shallow and deep waters.

Mazagon Docks Limited

Also present at the ongoing show is the Indian state-owned shipbuilder Mazagon Docks Limited (MDL), which builds a wide-range of warships and is also producing the French Scorpene submarine, under license from DCNS in India. Company officials tell Daily News, there is Philippine interest due to MDL’s wide breadth of capabilities. The Indian shipbuilder has delivered over 800 ships, including 220 to the Middle East, 10 to Africa, 7 to Europe and 4 to SE Asia. MDL has a proven ability in construction of submarines, destroyers, frigates, corvettes and commercial vessels and has the infrastructure to simultaneously accommodate 11 submarines and 10 warships.

Bharat Dynamics Limited

The leading producer of missile systems in India, Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) is also present at the show and one of the weapons being showcased is the indigenously developed Astra Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM). The Astra BVRAAM has already been integrated on Sukhoi SU-30 MKI and HAL Tejas Mk-1 fighter jets of the Indian Air Force (IAF). The Astra features inertial, mid-course update and terminal active radar homing and is able to attain a maximum speed of Mach 4.5 with its solid rocket motor. The missile has an engagement range of 80-110 km. According to company officials, there is interest in the Astra from regional air forces, many of which operate variants of the SU-27/SU-30.

Zen Technologies

Zen Technologies Limited, the leading Indian provider of state-of-the-art Combat Training Solutions and Counter-Drone Technology, is making its maiden show appearance. Speaking to Daily News, a company official said the company was eyeing the Philippine market for training systems requirements for all three services. He said Zen Technologies was actively pursuing current and emerging opportunities for its products in Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. The company’s range of military training simulators includes, infantry weapon simulators, tank simulators, driving simulators and air defence simulators.

Tonbo Imaging

Another first time participant at the show, is Tonbo Imaging, which designs, builds and deploys advanced imaging and sensor systems for various military applications. Speaking to Daily News, Ankit Kumar, Co-founder, Chief Revenue and Business Officer, Tonbo Imaging said the company has been successful in selling sold Thermal Binoculars, Thermal Sights, Hand Held Sights, Sniper Sights and Multi-Function Binoculars to the Philippine Police and Department of National Defence. Kumar is also appreciative of the Philippine defence procurement process, which he says is quick, efficient and transparent. The company entered the Philippine market in 2017 and is today present all over the region, including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, etc. The company is also in discussions with Taiwan for its products. Tonbo Imaging today has offices in India, the UAE and Melbourne, to cater for its growing customer requirements.
