Leonardo Helicopters Eager to Meet Future JGSDF Needs

Our Bureau - : Mar 16, 2023 - : 5:56 am

Leonardo Helicopters is engaging with the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF)/Ground Staff Office on future helicopter requirements.

“We are engaging with the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF)/Ground Staff Office on future helicopter requirements,” a company spokesperson told Daily News. At the show, the company is highlighting the AW139M multi-mission helicopter, the military version of the well-known AW139, as the ideal platform for government and military missions, in all weather and environmental conditions.

The Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) also operates a fleet of ten heavy AW101 helicopters configured for mine countermeasure and transportation missions, designated as the MCH-101 in Japanese service, plus three CH-101 utility transports. The development of this variant of the AW101/MCH-101 has been led by Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI), as prime contractor, with Leonardo UK in Yeovil (the original AW101 designer) continuing to provide technical support. KHI delivered the first AW101 aircraft to the JMSDF in May 2006.

In Japan, the AW101/MCH-101 primary task is Airborne Mine Counter Measure and is one of only two helicopter types capable of towing the AN/AQS-24A, the only operationally proven, high-speed airborne mine hunting system in the world. The AW101/MCH-101’s unique three-engine configuration allows for safe operations when towing at low altitude and slow speeds. The AW101 Merlin is also operated by the Royal Navy as its Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) helicopter.

Leonardo’s helicopters have been operating in Japan since the mid-1980s as part of several key programmes and today, there are some 160 Leonardo helicopters of different types in service with the JMSDF, Coast Guard, Police, Fire Service and with specialized operators for medical and commercial services.
