Naval Group Focusses on Drone Integration Expertise at Maiden UMEX Outing

: Feb 25, 2018 - : 3:37 pm

Naval Group placed the emphasis on civilian and military drones, at its maiden appearance at Unmanned Systems Exhibition and Conference (UMEX) in Abu Dhabi, which ended earlier this week.

In addition to highlighting its extensive experience as a drone integrator, Naval Group showcased its new rotary-wing drone equipping surface combatants developed through the partnership with Airbus.

Naval Group started working on naval integration of aerial drones in 2005

In addition to the rotary-wing VSR 700 drone developed in partnership with Airbus, Naval Group demonstrated the deployment of its new I4Drones mission system which was realized in 2017 and allows coordinated deployment, in real time, of three drones (air, surface and submarine).

“We are paying a great deal of attention to new projects in the Gulf as the GCC countries are studying modernisation and reinforcement of their surface capacity in terms of combatant warships and of course Naval Group is interested in all these projects, though we don’t comment on specific ongoing projects,” Jean-Luc Thouvenel, in charge of the Naval Group’s representative office in the United Arab Emirates told Asian Defence Technology on the sidelines at UMEX.

“We are participating in the show as we are now a major integrator of UAV technology and dedicate a lot of our R&D funds to creating aerial and underwater unmanned technologies and definitely we want to be a major player in this domain,” he added.

Naval Group has extensive experience in equipping surface vessels and submarines with air, surface and submarine drones, unveiling a new dimension for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

However, with the complexity of such combat systems and the multiplicity of sensors and interfaces, coupled with the unique constraints of a warship at sea; Naval Group is highlighting its expertise based on the technical knowledge of operational issues and the practical experience derived from marine missions to successfully undertake UAV integration for surface combatants.
