Naval Group Wins Dutch Submarine Contract

Our Bureau - : Mar 16, 2024 - : 2:09 pm

Naval Group has been chosen by The Netherlands Ministry of Defence to spearhead the Replacement Netherlands Submarine Capability project with the Barracuda-class expeditionary submarines. The announcement marks the conclusion of an exhaustive evaluation and paves the way for negotiations leading to the formalisation of a contract. Naval Group has expressed its anticipation for close collaboration with Dutch and European partners to realise this project.

“We are extremely honoured to have been selected by the Netherlands following a hard competition and to be involved in this project of strategic importance,” said Pierre Éric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group in the company’s press release on Saturday (Mar. 16). “The Barracuda family submarine will provide the Royal Netherlands Navy with extended leading-edge capabilities satisfying the requirements set by the Netherlands Ministry of Defence.”

“We look forward to start working closely with our Dutch partners to successfully execute this major program which contributes to the strategic autonomy of the Netherlands,” he added.

The award decision underscores a commitment to forging a robust strategic partnership between the group and the Netherlands. The objective is to enhance the submarine capabilities of the Royal Netherlands Navy and foster deeper cooperation with the Netherlands’ MOD, industry stakeholders, and research and development (R&D) partners.

Naval Group’s Barracuda-class submarine as chosen by the Netherlands is a class of diesel-electric attack submarines derived from the French Navy’s Suffren-class nuclear attack submarine. With a displacement of 3,300 tonnes, 82 metres in length, and 8.2 metres beam, it has a maximum range of 28,000 km (15,000 nm).

Known in the Netherlands as the Orka-class submarine, four of these will replace the Royal Netherlands Navy’s Walrus-class submarines which have been in active service since 1990.
