Indonesian state-owned airline, Pelita Air, is aiming to gradually increase its fleet to 20 aircraft in 2023. While the airline currently only has two of the 12 Airbus A320-214s it ordered in 2021, six more aircraft are expected to arrive before the end of this year.
“God willing, this year we can fly eight planes, and later in the middle of next year we can fly 20 planes,” said the Indonesian Minister of State Owned Enterprise (SOE), Erick Thohir during a hearing with the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday (Aug. 24).
Without specifying what aircraft type from which maker the other additional eight planes Pelita Air is planning to acquire in 2023, he further expressed that he has ordered the airline to become one of the backbones of the development of the domestic aviation industry in Indonesia.
Established in 1970 as a subsidiary of the Indonesian State Oil and Natural Gas Mining Company (PT Pertamina), Pelita Air provides rental air transportation services for the oil and gas industry in Indonesia and had its hand in public commercial aviation service between 2000 to 2005.
Following the restructuring of the Indonesian flag carrier airline Garuda Indonesia in 2021 as the result of gross mismanagement and corruption fiasco, Pelita Air together with a privately-owned Indonesian airline TransNusa are positioned to take over most of the domestic routes which were previously served by Garuda Indonesia.
In April this year, the airline started flying its regular Jakarta-Bali route before adding a new route between Jakarta and Yogyakarta in June 2022. Both routes are being served daily with the airline’s new Airbus A320-214s with a plan to increase flight frequencies to twice daily.
