Airbus and Qatar Airways have settled a dispute over surface damage on grounded A350 jets, the companies said on Wednesday. The settlement averts an UK court trial.
The “amicable settlement” ends a $2 billion row over the safety of Europe’s premier long-haul jet. Airbus had revoked dozens of other jet orders from Qatar ahead of a scheduled June court trial.
Qatar Airways and Airbus are pleased to have reached an amicable and mutually agreeable settlement in relation to their legal dispute over A350 surface degradation and the grounding of A350 aircraft.
A repair project is now underway and both parties look forward to getting these aircraft safely back in the air,” an Aribus statement said. The settlement agreement is not an admission of liability for either party, it added.
The carrier had challenged the European planemaker over safety and taken it to court after cracks in the painted surface exposed gaps in a sub-layer of A350 lightning protection. The flaw prompted its regulator to ground 29 of the jets. Airbus, even while acknowledging quality flaws, insisted that the jets are safe.
