The Royal Thai Army will receive an additional Airbus C295 air-lifter, following the placement of a firm order by the Ministry of Defence of Thailand with the European firm.
The aircraft has been ordered in a utility transport configuration and will increase Thailand’s in-country C295 fleet to three aircraft.
This new order from Thailand follows after a recent order for three C295 transport aircraft from an undisclosed military customer in the region.
Johan Pelissier, Head of Asia Pacific at Airbus Defence and Space said: “This additional order from the Ministry of Defence of Thailand speaks strongly of its continued confidence in our proven military transport capabilities.”
The new aircraft will be delivered to the Thai Army in 2023.
The C295 is used with the the Royal Thai Army for missions ranging from cargo transport to medical evacuation and paratrooping deployment.
“The C295 is gaining popularity in Asia Pacific due to its modularity, maneuverability and endurance capability. The low cost of operation compared to any other platform of its class makes it a good prospect for the militaries. We certainly look forward to supporting the growing C295 fleet in this region,” added Pelissier.
This latest contract brings the total number of C295 ordered in the Asia Pacific region to 25.
The new C295W version is equipped with winglets and is capable of transporting more payload over larger distances in the hot and high conditions, resulting in fuel consumption savings of around 4% and increased safety margins in mountainous regions.
Previously produced by Construcciones Aeronáuticas SA (CASA, a Spanish aircraft manufacturer that is now part of Airbus Defence and Space), the C295’s production takes place at Airbus’ facility in Spain.
With a growing demand for multirole airlift capabilities, the C295 is becoming the new standard for tactical and humanitarian operations.
The aircraft has received orders from military and civil operators all over the world, from Canada and Egypt to Spain and Indonesia.
