“There are lots of different business
models [here]. Some carriers are
simply talking transactional, looking
for C-checks only, but others are looking
for much more depending on how long
they have been in business, how much they
are capitalised, and whether their MRO
needs are seen as strategic or immediate.
Some even apply portfolio theory to MRO
needs – so [Airbus] needs to support all
kinds,” he explains.
Not an easy task for MRO providers,
but one that MRO operators are rising to
the challenge of, says Lufthansa Technik’s
Reinert. His company has approached the
challenge not from a subsidiarial angle,
but through collaboration. “We have four
successful joint ventures in Asia, two in
China, one on the Philippines and one in
Malaysia,” he notes.
Anderson agrees with this approach.
According to him, done correctly, joint
ventures make the final product or service
something better. “In any agreement –
such as a marriage – there needs to be
give and take to make it work well. At
Airbus, we have to understand the limits
(of joint ventures) and be prudent.”
