Australia, Singapore Suspend 737 Max Jets

: Mar 12, 2019 - : 4:16 am

Both Singapore and Australia announced that they are suspending operations of Boeing’s 737 MAX aircraft on Tuesday, following Sunday’s crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) temporarily suspended operation of all variants of the Boeing 737 Max aircraft into and out of Singapore, in light of two fatal accidents involving the aircraft in less than five months. The suspension took effect from 2pm local time on March 12.

“The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) is temporarily suspending operation of all variants of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft into and out of Singapore in light of two fatal accidents involving Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in less than five months,” it said in a statement.

It said that it is working with Changi Airport and the affected airlines to minimise the impact to passengers.

“During the temporary suspension, CAAS will gather more information and review the safety risk associated with the continued operation of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft into and out of Singapore,” it said.

“CAAS is closely monitoring the situation and is in close communication with the US Federal Aviation Administration and other aviation regulators, as well as Boeing.”

Singapore Airlines’ (SIA) regional wing, SilkAir, which operates six Boeing 737 Max aircraft, will be affected by the temporary suspension.

The suspension will be reviewed as “relevant safety information becomes available”, it added.

Australia also said its ban is temporary while they “wait for more information to review the safety risks of continued operations” of the aircraft. Australia’s decision will only affect Singapore Airline’s Silk Air and Fiji Airways as no domestic airlines use the plane, stated a Reuters report.

The other airlines currently operating Boeing 737 Max aircraft to Singapore include China Southern Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Shandong Airlines and Thai Lion Air.
