DHL Global Forwarding, in partnership with Schneider Electric, agreed to design and launch a new multi-modal shipping model in Singapore, on Wednesday (Jan. 31). This new method will utilize sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) to enhance supply chain agility and reduce environmental impact.
The collaboration has implemented two innovative multi-modal shipping bridges, connecting Singapore and North America, and India and North America, with plans for eight global bridges designed to reduce Scope 3 carbon emissions from air freight.
Schneider Electric estimates up to a 40% reduction in carbon emissions for regional shipment lanes compared to standard air fulfillment, with the pilot project already achieving up to a 20% reduction since March 2023.
The model leverages sea freight to offset costs, enabling investment in SAFs to further reduce carbon emissions, creating a more sustainable and cost-effective shipping solution.
This initiative marks a shift in the industry by integrating multi-modal shipping as a standard practice for reducing Scope 3 carbon emissions, providing agility and flexibility in delivery options while achieving up to 90% carbon neutrality through DHL’s GoGreen Plus service.
“Through our GoGreen Plus initiative, we provide our customers with sustainable transport solutions, including SAF. Our partnership with Schneider Electric is instrumental in driving positive change and making sustainable logistics a reality,” said Thomas George, Chief Commercial Officer, DHL Global Forwarding. “At DHL, we have set a goal to reduce GHG emissions from 39 to 29 million tonnes CO₂e by 2030. To achieve this, we are investing €7 billion in clean operations, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to a greener future,”
“At Schneider Electric, sustainability is at the core of our mission and it drives us to innovate for the future,” said Mourad Tamoud, EVP Global Supply Chain at Schneider Electric. “We can’t do this alone: partnerships with our supply chain ecosystem and strategic partners like DHL are essential. We hope others are inspired by these possibilities, so we can collectively reduce carbon emissions.”
Schneider Electric has set ambitious targets to achieve net-zero readiness across its operations, with a 25% absolute carbon reduction goal by 2030, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.
