BlackSky Technology (BlackSky), an American company specializing in space-based intelligence, has won a contract with Thales Alenia Space to deliver Gen-3 Earth observation satellites, ground station capabilities, and flight operations support for the Indonesian Ministry of Defense (Kementerian Pertahanan / Kemhan).
The multi-year contract worth around USD50 million, will also see the Virginia-headquartered company provide low-latency, all-weather, 24-hour, real-time imagery and analytics technology and services to support the Kemhan’s duty to safeguard Indonesia’s sovereignty.
“Continuing our string of pioneering innovations in the space-based intelligence industry, BlackSky now offers sovereign nations the ability to gain foresight into critical matters that affect their national security and economy using commercially available Earth observation technology today,” said Brian E. O’Toole, BlackSky CEO on the company’s press release, on Thursday (Feb. 8).
“Indonesia’s first sovereign satellites will share the same advanced capabilities as BlackSky’s future Gen-3 commercial constellation,” he added.
Under a separate contract from PT LEN Industri, an Indonesian state-owned enterprise in electronics, telecommunication, and defense systems, BlackSky and Thales Alenia Space are already supplying Kemhan with high-resolution imagery and analytical services. The new contract combines services, hardware, and ground-systems software into a single package.
“This announcement follows the multi-mission contract already signed between Thales Alenia Space and PT Len Industri to provide a state-of-the-art Earth observation constellation combining both radar and optical sensors and dedicated to the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD),” said Hervé Derrey, Thales Alenia Space CEO.
“We are very pleased to partner with BlackSky to deliver modern space capabilities aligns with Indonesia’s drive to modernize and restructure its defense capabilities in an increasingly complex threat environment.”
A collaboration between a French technology company Thales, and an Italian defense company Leonardo, Thales Alenia Space also co-owns a Seattle-based satellite manufacturer LeoStella together with BlackSky.
