Ill Advised Adventure
As the ongoing Russian aggression on Ukraine continues, the
world has witnessed the humiliation of Russia’s military that has
been repeatedly outsmarted by a highly motivated Ukrainian
military, which is well supplied by the West. The initial days of
Russian airborne assaults against Ukrainian targets have now
given way to spectacular combined-arms assaults by the
Ukrainian miliary, which have pushed back Russian troops.
The poor use of tactics and military equipment by the Russian
armed forces is also likely to have a catastrophic effect on
Russian defence exports in the years to come, with the
superiority of Russian military equipment being reduced to a
myth. The immediate beneficiaries of a decline in Russian
defence exports will be countries like Israel, China, Turkey, and
South Korea, which have witnessed dramatic growth in export
orders in recent years. Established Western firms will also
benefit, an example being Indonesia’s decision to order 42
Dassault Rafale fighter jets, earlier this year. Many nations that
have large inventories of Russian defence equipment are likely
to now switch to other nations for their defence needs.
The decline in Russian defence exports will also mean its famed
design bureaus will be starved of funds to develop 6th
generation military platforms, work on which is well underway in
the Western world. This could however provide opportunities to
countries like China and India, which could gain access to
military technologies and equipment that were hitherto
off-limits. Both countries could also benefit from upgrade and
maintenance/support opportunities in countries that already
operate Russian defence equipment.
