Airbus SE is looking at assembling its newest A330neo wide-body jet in China as part of a bid to win orders for the plane in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, stated a Bloomberg report.
The European aircraft manufacturer has proposed to expand its existing plant in Tianjin to accommodate the model. They currently build the single-aisle A320 there.
However, a decision hasn’t been made with the business case yet to be established. A spokesman for Airbus declined to comment. The company had previously offered to build their A380s at the site, but the proposal was rejected as the Chinese government was unsure if the jet was suitable for the local environment.
However, the A330neo is potentially a better fit for the expansive Asian nation, owing to its 250-280 capacity, a range of 15,000km (8,000 nmi) and its twin aisles, which allow for speedy boarding and quick aircraft turnarounds.
This news comes shortly after Rolls Royce made plans to produce their engines in a nearby factory in Tianjin. Rolls Royce is going to be building the Trent 7000 turbine in China to be possibly used by the Chinese COMAC aircraft. The Trent 7000 turbine is the only engine option for the A330neo and its move to a China facility opens up a door for Airbus.
Building wide-body jets in China would boost Airbus’s challenge to Boeing Co., which opened a so-called completion center near Shanghai last year but has so far held off from assembling planes in the country.
