ASELSAN achieved a significant milestone in its space research and satellite payload development with the successful launch of the TURKSAT-6A satellite. The launch took place on 9 July from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida with a SpaceX Falcon9 rocket.
This historic event places Türkiye among an exclusive group of 10 countries capable of manufacturing their own communication satellites. The satellite’s operational lifespan will be significantly supported by the company-engineered Ku-Band and X-Band payloads.
“Our communication payloads on Türkiye’s first indigenously developed satellite are a source of pride for ASELSAN. Our team has acquired significant know-how and expertise through our satellite projects, including TURKSAT-6A, and we are committed to advancing our presence in space technologies with new projects,” stated ASELSAN CEO & President Ahmet Akyol.
ASELSAN embarked on its space technology journey in 2000 and has played a crucial role in the project by developing the Ku-Band and X-Band payloads. The advanced Ku-Band payload will enable the satellite to provide communication services to Türkiye, Europe, and South Asia. This expansion into South Asia marks a significant enhancement of the Turkish satellite service area, ushering in a new era for the country’s space capabilities.
In the TURKSAT-6A Project, ASELSAN developed and qualified its own internal design, assembly, integration, and testing processes for space applications. Over 100 ASELSAN personnel contributed to this challenging project, designing payloads with more than 80 space electronic units. The ASELSAN payloads have a power consumption of 5 kW and a total mass of 300 kilograms.
Following the satellite’s shipment to the USA on 4 June, ASELSAN engineers, along with other TURKSAT-6A partners, completed the necessary inspections and testing activities at the launch site. The payloads, designed and qualified by ASELSAN, are expected to serve in orbit for 15 years.
Upon successful completion of the launch and the early operations phase, ASELSAN’s engineers will conduct payload testing for the first time. The recently launched satellite is anticipated to begin serving Türkiye’s satellite communication needs in 2024.
