Leonardo, an Italian aerospace company, and the Ministry of Defense of Malaysia (Mindef) have marked a significant milestone during the Defense Services Asia Exhibition & Conference (DSA) by finalizing the Industrial Collaboration Programme Agreement (ICP Agreement). This agreement follows the procurement deal made in May 2023, which saw Malaysia purchasing two ATR P-72M aircraft along with associated logistics and training services.
The ICP Agreement strengthens the collaboration between Malaysia and Italy, focusing on joint projects involving the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), academic institutions, and local industries. These projects aim to facilitate technology transfer and explore new avenues for cooperation. Notably, universities such as MIAT (UniKL) will participate in research and development activities within the aeronautical sector, enhancing the skills of young aeronautical engineers.
Local companies will assist Leonardo in developing the aircraft to meet Malaysia’s specifications as outlined in the contract. Additionally, Leonardo will provide support to the RMAF through projects aimed at improving aeronautical processes to sustain the operation of the ATR P-72M fleet and manage the supply chain efficiently. These efforts will draw upon the expertise gained through Leonardo’s LEAP (Leonardo Empowering Advanced Partnerships) programme, which aims to strengthen its supply chain.
The ATR P-72M is a twin-turboprop aircraft designed for various maritime patrol missions, including surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface unit warfare, search and rescue, environmental monitoring, medical evacuation, and personnel/material transport.
