First Two Sabrah Light Tanks Arrives in The Philippines

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Dec 19, 2022 - : 2:50 pm

The Philippine Army (PA) received a delivery of two Sabrah light tanks from Ebit Systems, Israel according to MaxDefense Philippines’ social media account on Sunday (Dec. 18). These are the first batch of 18 Sabrah light tanks and 10 8×8 Sabrah “wheeled light tank” the PA ordered from the Israeli company in January 2021.

The PA is expecting a full delivery of all these vehicles in 2023. It also plans to assign the 1st Tank Battalion as the sole operator of all these vehicles. The PA’s 1st Tank Battalion was reactivated in April this year after more than sixty years of inactivity.

Developed using ASCOD 2 Armored Fighting Vehicle (AFV) platform by Elbit Systems of Israel, the Sabrah light tank was chosen against South Korea’s Hanwha K-21-105 and Indonesia’s PT PINDAD – Turkey’s FNSS joint project Harimau/Kaplan Medium Tank. A contract worth around US$185.2 million for eighteen Sabrah light tanks, one ASCOD 2 armored recovery, one ASCOD 2 armored command vehicle, as well as ten Sabrah Pandur II 8×8 AFVs was awarded to Elbit Systems in September 2020 with initial delivery in early 2022 for the tracked version, and in 2023 for the wheeled ones.

The arrival of these armored vehicles marks the return of the large-caliber cannon-armed tanks in the Philippine Army which desperately need a firepower upgrade after the experience of fighting ISIS-linked terrorists in Marawi city in 2017.
