IAI Secures Contract for Airborne Radios

Our Bureau - : Aug 5, 2024 - : 9:12 pm

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has secured a contract to supply airborne radios for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). These radios will be installed on Heron-type Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) used for maritime patrol over the Israeli Economic Exclusion Zone (EEZ). The radios will enable Navy personnel stationed onshore to communicate directly with vessels within the EEZ.

The radios, designated ARC840 SDR, are produced by ELTA Systems Ltd., IAI’s defence electronics division. Utilising advanced Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology, these radios facilitate voice, video, and data communications. They support a wide range of communication protocols and modulations, ensuring interoperability across various domains—land, air, and sea. The ARC840 is part of IAI’s broader UAV communication product suite, which includes SDR radios, SATCOM, and Line-Of-Sight (LOS) systems.

The company’s airborne communication solutions are well-regarded, with decades of operational experience. The company’s systems have been deployed on numerous manned and unmanned aerial platforms, accruing extensive operational and combat experience. IAI has worked with major platform manufacturers such as Airbus, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Dassault Aviation, among others.

Adi Dulberg, VP & GM of IAI ELTA’s Intelligence, Communications, and Electronic Warfare Division, commented, “Collaboration between different forces, in separate domains of operation, requires interoperability between different and disparate communications systems. ELTA’s SDR technology, supporting multiple channels, modulations, and networks, serves as a crucial link between networks, enabling forces in the land, air, and sea to collaborate effectively. We are proud to be selected by the IDF to support the Israeli Air Force and Navy in their day-to-day missions.”
