India Looks to Acquire Sniper Rifles for NSG Commandoes

India’s Ministy of Home Affairs recently announced a tender for the acquisition of six 7.62 X 51mm bolt action sniper rifles for its National Security Guard (NSG) commandoes.

The sniper rifles will also require to be fitted with telescopic day and night sights (Thermal Imaging / image intensifier and Assy).

The tender document specifies that only an Indian manufacturer / OEM is eligible to bid.

The tender calls for the bolt action sniper rifles of 7.62 X 51mm NATO caliber to not weigh more than 8 kgs with magazine and telescopic sight. An effective range of 800m or better has been called for.

The tender document calls for bids to be submitted by October 10.

The NSG comprises of a Special Action Group (SAG) comprised of army personnel and a Special Ranger Group (SRG) comprised of personnel drawn from India’s Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and state police forces.

The NSG is based out of Manesar, Gurgaon.

India’s NSG formally came into being in September, 1986 and was modelled on the pattern of the SAS of UK and Germany’s GSG-9.
